洋楽で英語を学ぼうでは、新旧の洋楽曲から英会話などで使えそうなフレーズをいくつかピックアップしてご紹介しています。今回はB.o.BのAirplaneから「for the hell of it」などのフレーズをご紹介します。

Airplane by B.o.B ft. ヘイリー・ウィリアムス

人気ラッパーBYOBがロックバンド、パラモアのボーカルヘイリー・ウィリアムスをフューチャーした２０１０年のヒット曲です。彼女はそれまでゴリゴリのロックで歌っていましたが、こういった曲でも違和感なく聴けますね。

Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? (00:09頃)

pretendで～のふりをするをいう意味です。

例：
Let’s pretend cool at this party.
このパーティではカッコよくふるまおうぜ！

‘Cause after all the partyin’ and smashin’ and crashin’ (00:36頃)

after allで結局～という意味です。

例：
After a long fight, they broke up after all.
長いケンカの後、彼らは結局別れた

You get another hand soon after you fold (00:54頃)

soon afterでその後まもなくという意味です。

例：
Soon after he got home, his package arrived.
彼が家についてまもなくして荷物が届いた

I’m on my way so don’t close that gate (01:04頃)

on one’s wayで～に向かっている途中という意味です。

例：
He is on his way home
彼は家に帰っている途中です

And I’ll be right back at it by the end of the night (01:10頃)

by the end of で～が終わるまでにはという意味です。

例：
I have to find out a solution by the end of this session.
このセッションがおわるまでに解決法を見つけなければいけない

And back when I was rappin’ for the hell of it (01:40頃)

for the hell of itで冗談で、面白半分でという意味です。

例：
I was dating him for the hell of it
私は冗談で彼と付き合っていた

And back before I tried to cover up my slang (01:58頃)

cover upで隠す、隠蔽するという意味です。

例：
He covered up his fault
彼はミスを隠蔽した
